LANGUAGES SPOKEN IN SOUTH WALES.
A highly interesting section of the census returns is that relating to the language spoken in Monmouthshire and South Wales.
To first take Monmouthshire. In 1891 there was an enumerated population in that county of 275,242, of whom 217,664 spoke English 9,816, Welsh 29,743 both English and Welsh; 555, other languages; while 2,475 persons made no statement on the point, and 15,209 were infants under 2 years of age.
In the Chepstow registration division there were 18,042 English-speaking residents, 30 spoke only Welsh, and 249 both English and Welsh.
In Monmouth registration division the figures were - English, 26,098; Welsh, 29; bi-lingual, 306.
In Abergavenny, 21,985 spoke English, 361 Welsh, and y 2,420 both languages.
In Bedwellty division there were 38,833 English-speaking people, 6,805 Welsh, and 15,105 Welsh and English.
Pontypool had 33,426 English, 351 Welsh, and 3,499 bi-linguals.
With a population of 96,796 Newport district had 79,280 English-speaking residents, and 2,240 Welsh, while 8,164 were at at home in both languages.
Turning to Glamor[gan]shire, we find that, with a population of 693,072. the English numbered 326,481, the Welsh 142,346, and the bi-linguals 177,726.
In Cardiff distinct, with an enumerated population of 173,796 in 1891, there were 138,276 English, 3,120 Welsh, and 19,395 English and Welsh-speaking people.
The proportion of Welsh was, of course, very much larger in the Swansea district. With a population of 114,326, 57,099 spoke the English language, 22,417 the Welsh, and 27,229 both languages.
